What is Innovations in Textiles?

Innovations in Textiles 10 is a collaborative event in the St. Louis, Missouri and Madison County, Illinois region, that investigates the state of contemporary textile arts. Over 20 nonprofit and private arts organizations join forces to present exhibitions related to fiber art created by regional, national and international artists. Activities include workshops, lectures, gallery tours, and community programs. Innovations in Textiles 10 serves to enlighten the community with a unique aesthetic prospective on fiber art featuring various materials and techniques. The broad range of programming offered mirrors the symposium’s dedication to the investigation of innovative ideas.

Innovations in Textiles began in 1995 as a biennial collaborative program spearheaded and coordinated by Craft Alliance, growing from 10 participating nonprofit and private galleries in 1995 to 21 galleries in 2015. It highlights innovations in contemporary textile art with exhibitions and related events.

Material Revival, at the Edwardsville Arts Center, is part of the Innovations line-up this year and is a reunion of the artists who I collaborated with in 2011 (the last Innovations event until now). I curated that show which was titled Collaboration: Reaping and Sewing and held at Jacoby Arts Center in Alton. Five of the original six artists are reuniting and a 6th artist has been invited to join the group. All of us are connected by a student/teacher/mentor relationship.  This blog is devoted to showcasing the artists and bringing you news about events related to Innovations.

Though some of the Innovation shows will be opening as early as August and others continuing through December, the weekend of October 2, 3, and 4 will see a lot of activity.  Gallery hops, keynote speaker, artist talks, bus tour and self guided tours and a special reception at Art Saint Louis for Fiber Focus, the only juried fiber show in the Innovations line up.  Fiber Focus juror is none other than Marci Rae McDade, editor of Surface Design Journal and she will be that reception.

The big events of Oct 2, 3 and 4 have been posted here at the Special Events page on this blog.
